ReadWriteWeb’s Focus on African Tech

Recently, I was in touch with the staff of ReadWriteWeb (one of the most popular technology blogs in the world with 231,000+ daily readers) and I was asked to write a three part essay on the state of social media and web development in Africa. In some way it’s only fitting that RWW devote more attention to Africa. According to Alexa.com South Africa brings them 3.2% of their readers right after the U.K. (5.6%), India (6.7%), Germany (7.3%) and the U.S. (45.2%). A big thanks to editor Richard MacManus for recognizing how topical this issue is and for giving me the opportunity.

The three part essay will be published throughout the week and will focus on three aspects of web technology in Africa. You can find my profile and the articles published on ReadWriteWeb here. The articles focus on the ‘leaders’ of social media development in Africa, the disruptive effects of web technologies on African governments and innovations and advancements in mobile connectivity.

It was difficult to write an ‘all encompassing’ look at Africa’s tech space without forgetting some groups and failing to mention others. That in and of itself is a good thing. It means that there’s so much going on here now that it all can’t be wrapped up in a handful of articles!

Also, I recently joined the fold at GlobalVoicesOnline. There I’ll be covering technology as it relates to East-Africa on a weekly basis. You can follow my writing there by subscribing to this feed.
