Post a Blog, Plant a Tree with Gremz

Gremz is a web widget that allows users to plant trees by posting blogs. There’s a graphic that shows a tiny tree, as you post more entries, your tree grows. When your virtual tree grows to a certain size, the Gremz staff actually goes out and plants a tree for you in areas around the globe like Inner Mongolia and West Africa. And so you can keep tabs on your new real-world buddy, Gremz uses an AJAX map that shows you where in the world your tree was planted, with notes about it’s progress. It’s an interesting concept that allows you to ‘offset’ the amount of electricity you’re using by blogging.

Mot people seem to have a hard time connecting their use of things like cell phones and the internet to global warming but those server farms are drawing power from somewhere! Gremz is excellent because it not only makes people aware, but it makes them do something proactive about it.
