Spotlight on African Podcasts

What are some of the best Africa related podcasts? Well, we’re quite partial to our own Appfricast, but if our show isn’t your thing, here are ten other podcasts (in no particular order) worth following. We found several shows that were either apparently defunct or that updated too infrequently to be counted. For instance the One Campaign hasn’t updated their podcast since May. Thus, the following shows were updated no later than the last month or two.

1. ZaTechShow (Tech) by Simon Dingle and more often than not Jon Tullett, Ben Kelly, Duncan McLeod, and Brett Haggard. Weekly insight into technology news from South Africa’s perspective.

2. Africa Past & Present (Education) by Michigan State University historians Peter Alegi and Peter Limb. Africa Past and Present is a podcast about history, culture, and politics in Africa and the diaspora. The show highlights interesting and significant people, ideas, and discussions in African Studies from a wide range of disciplines and perspectives.

3. Afropop Worldwide (Music) by World Music Productions. An aural tour of the content’s contemporary musicians and songwriters.

4. Africa: On and Off the Roads (Society and Culture) by Alberico Barattierri. A video podcast documenting 15 years of travel across the Sahara desert by Italian filmmaker Alberico.

5. Voices of the Middle East and North Africa (Society and Culture) by kpfa.org. More about the Middle East than Africa, but North Africa is still every bit a part of the continent as any other region.

6. Africa: Open for Business (TV & Film) by nbpc.tv. Ten stories. One continent.

7. BBC’s Africa Today (News & Politics) by BBC. News and current events from the BBC.

8. The ZaShow (Society and Culture) by Glen and Bridgitte Verran. Local news, culture, soundseeing tours, educational facts and language tips in Zulu and Afrikaans.

9. MyBroadband (Tech) by MyBroadband.com. Tech news, gadget reviews and gear lust.

10. Displaced African (Life) by Mwangi. A native Kenyan blogs about his life experiences after immigrating to Australia.
