Intel Offers WiMAX and Training to Kenya

Intel, the inventor of microprocessors and the world’s largest semiconductor company has signed a contract with Kenya Data Networks (KDN) and Alcatel Lucent to offer Kenya the first mobile WiMax trail using Wimax 802.16e technology. The technology will provide wireless broadband service at affordable prices, sending data up to 75mbps without cables. According to Chairman of Intel Corporation Craig Barrett, this will stimulate Kenya’s social economic development, ensuring that Kenya gets a seat at the table of the 21st century knowledge economy.

Kenya’s primary school teachers will begin to receive training from the Intel Teach Program in 2009 and this will enable them to integrate technology in their lessons. Intel also agreed with Safaricom to collaborate on a bundling program that would allow citizens access ICTs at affordable prices. In yet another agreement, Kenya’s ICT board will collaborate with Intel in developing localized data for the Intel Learning and Teaching Technology site, an interactive Internet resource for learning mathematics and science.

Barrett was on his first trip to Kenya where he also met with Education Ministers, whom he told to outline challenges they face in their respective countries with regard to technology and he would help identify potential areas to collaborate with them.
