Ugandans Design Cost Effective Vehicle

With the increasing gas prices in the region, commuters need a way of keeping on the road. A liter of petrol goes for about Uganda Shs 2800 (about one dollar 50 cents) in Kampala, and prices are expected to go higher. The country recently discovered oil but drilling is yet to start. There seems to be an innovation to counter this problem though.

Here comes the VDS Vision 200, a cost-effective vehicle that was designed by the Vehicle Design Summit 2.0, with some undergraduate students at Makerere University being major contributors. the 4-6 seater vehicle is believed to save a lot of fuel. The New Vision reported that the vehicle requires one liter of petrol to cover a distance of 80km.  The car will also have a 95% reduction in materials and toxicity. The vehicle will first be used in India and China and later in Africa.

The Vehicle Design Summit 2.0 comprises 31 teams selected from some of the world’s to technology research institutions like Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard University, Princeton University,  FH Bochum University of Applied Sciences in Germany, Imperial College of London UK and Delhi College in India.

The Ugandan students have designed the power electronics and data networking systems. The students have recently been exhibiting the car at Polytechnico Di Torino University in Torino, Italy along the likes of Ferrari and Fiat.

The team was assisted by Prof. S.S Tickodri Togboa, a Cambridge University trained Engineering Scientist and professor of Engineering Mathematics at Makerere University, together with Mr. Paul Isaac Musaasizi, a lecturer at the University. The students are a mix of Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Information Technology led by Mr Jeremy Steven Ntambi who recently graduated with  first class degree in Electrical Engineering.
