Ghana to Encourage Outsourcing with Countrywide Broadband, IP Laws

Ghana Business News reports:

The Ghana government has awarded a $150 million contract to Huawei Technologies, a Chinese-based ICT and telecommunication infrastructure company, to provide modern infrastructure to ensure internet broadband availability countrywide within the next 24 months.

The Minister of Communications made the announcement at the beginning of a two day conference on outsourcing, organized under the theme “Outsourcing to Ghana, Africa’s Golden Gateway”.

For Ghana to become an IT and outsourcing hub, the country needs not only better infrastructure, but better IT education. The low cost of living (and thus low salaries) of IT workers makes it an extremely attractive destination for business processing; however, Ghana’s IT workers often lack the skills and knowledge necessary to accomplish the work.
The Minister of Communications also pledged to develop legislation in the areas of data protection and intellectual property, to improve the attractiveness of Ghana’s business environment for outsourcing.
