Kigali announces fast speed mobile wireless Internet. Using a technology called WiBro, a wireless broadband solution developed by South Korean telecoms, users will be able to access the Internet uninterrupted from any part of the city. The project is expected to cost $8 million.
The Deputy CEO in charge of IT, Nkubito Bakuramutsa, said that the national fiber-optic backbone should be complete by December. Once the backbone is constructed, it will provide broadband throughout the country. The government hopes to increase access to over 4 million Rwandans in the next few years.
The project, contracted to a Korean company is costing $40 million. It will link 36 hubs throughout the country’s 36 districts, as well as to the undersea cable in Mobassa.
