This Week in African Tech

Teddy Rist or Bobby Sager?If the MacArthur Foundation offered grants for action, adventure and intrigue the NBC show The Philanthropist would be a documentary about one of the winners. Instead it channels real-life philanthropist Bob Segar and his efforts to change the world, one C-note at a time.

The proposed .eco domain is the effort of a group called Dot Echo in collaboration with Al Gore and the Sierra Club to raise money for environmental causes. The obvious flaw being that most servers aren’t ‘eco-friendly’ and so they may be contributing to the very problem they want to solve.

Last week in Oxford, UK I had the chance to have a few conversations with Fred Swaniker, co-founder of the African Leadership Academy. I really think some of the work they’re doing there is quite brilliant. For instance, to teach their kids about economics, they created a campus currency, bank and ATM system. What are the indicators of schools that truly foster innovation?
