Nigeria Launches New Anti-419 Initiative

Last week, Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) launched Operation “Eagle Claw,” to bust syndicates of 419 scammers. The anti-corruption police report 800 scam email addresses shut-down and 18 high level scammers arrested.

Over the next eighteen months, Eagle Claw will work in conjunction with Microsoft to not only identify fraudulent emails, but also to contact potential victims and advise them that they’re corresponding with scammers.

“Eagle Claw” is the EFCC’s first technological initiative against scammers. In the past, their strategy for combating cyber crime revolved around raiding cybercafés and responding to victims’ petitions. Only time will tell if this new initiative will be effective, but it’s sure to be more efficient than simply knocking on cybercafé doors.
