Chromium: Chrome for OSX and Linux

Google usually never disappoints, but I must say when they released their web browser Chrome earlier this month I was less than impressed. First, many people perceived it as a slight against the Mozilla Foundation, the group that produces the open source Firefox web browser and the email client Thunderbird. Historically, Google has been one of the biggest supporters of Mozilla’s fight to supplant Microsoft’s Internet Explorer as the world’s most used web browser. When they announced their Chrome browser, it introduced a direct competitor to Mozilla’s Firefox.

Second, Google introduced the browser as initially as a PC-only product. It make sense, PC’s still account for over 70% of the markets share of computer users. However, Mac and Linux users tend to be some of the more likely early adopters and ‘techie’ users. This includes much of the design community, the entertainment industry, and increasingly includes open source developers and programmers. So why on earth would Google introduce a new market and exclude them?

Whatever the reason, quite a few people weren’t happy about it including Jeremy White who decided to do something about it. Jeremy and a team of developers from his group Codeweavers collaboratively ported Chrome to OSX and Linux. It’s available for download here.
