    Recently my for-profit Uganda start-up Appfrica Labs was funded but that’s just the beginning. Now I have to make that money worth someone’s while! Anyways, here’s pictures of the new office, and the equipment I’ve purchased.

    The Pineapple Express

    { October 31st, 2008 }

    First I was away for a week, now Sarah’s gone.  It’s been good to focus on work and catch up on the things I always put off, then inevitably put off again so that I’m not completely absent all the time.  Last night I went to trivia night at a local pub called Bubble’s O Leary’s with some friends.  It was good company but the questions were particularly hard this week so I spent more time chatting than I did answering questions.  Tonight there’s a Halloween party that I’ll attend, another good break from a week full of work. I’m looking forward to Sarah’s return from Malawi.  I can’t wait to hear more about it and to see her pics. Sounds like it was quite the experience.

    We’re holding a U.S. election party in Kampala at a restaurant called LaFontaine next week and she’s no doubt excited to come back to start planning things.  My friend Simon and I are tracking down the SNL sketches with Tina Fey and the recent Obama infomercial to play.  The group should be quite diverse, a lot of Ugandans are interested in the outcome of this election as well as all the American expats living here.   There’s another similar party, but regardless we’ll have fun at Fontaines.

    As far as food is concerned, I’ve relied heavily upon Pineapple and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for sustenance.  There’s also been some soup from the care package that Sarah’s mother sent us a few weeks ago (thanks Barbara!)  Before Sarah left I went on a grocery run and picked up a bunch of food that I thought would last the whole time she was gone. It lasted more like two days and since then I’ve been avoiding going out as much as possible.  Mainly because traveling by special hire in Kampala is rather expensive so I try to conserve all my interactions with the outside world to one trip at a time. Or in some cases, one delivery at a time…

    There’s a guy here in town who will deliver anything to your doorstep for very little money!  He doesn’t have a company name or anything, you just call him and he brings you what you need.  He’s like a one-man-Zifty!  You can have him go stand in line to pay your bills, bring you take-out from places that don’t offer delivery, he’ll even deliver alcohol!  Earlier this week I had him bring me two bottles of Wine and some Pineapples.  There are definitely some perks to living in Africa!
